Reader and I were talking about our top 10 lists, as it is the season where everyone tries to boil down 12 months worth of art and expression into a neat little list, so….why not give it a go ourselves? Now, before I let you know what my top 10 albums of 2017 are, keep in mind, this list is my own, I’ll bug Reader into posting one later if you’re interested in his top 10! Now, here is mine:
Awaken, My Love! – Childish Gambino
Now I know this is kind of cheating, given this album came out in December of 2016, but I figure if you release something at the end of the year, it crosses over into the new year, and this album is definitely 2017 for me! I remember seeing a video of Donald Glover talking about how much Funkadelic has influenced his music, and how he loves the album “Maggot Brain”, now if you have heard this album front to back, its basically a love letter to Funkadelic.
Midnight Method – Jazz Spastiks
Who doesn’t love a little feel good hip hop, with lo-fi jazzy beats, makes me think of discovering backpacker hip-hop in the 90’s and I’m glad its still around in 2017, not my favourite hip hop album of the year though…
Friends – White Lies
Take a guy that sounds like the lead singer of Joy Division and drown it in the synth-pop beats of The Killers and you’ll get White Lies. I discovered these guys way back in my school days, and I’ve been bumping this album in my car since it’s release.
Run the Jewels 3 – Run the Jewels
This one, ooooh boy. Run the Jewels are enigmatic, two almost opposite hip-hop artists coming together to make music, already on their third album? I love these guys enough to have a RTJ poster hung up in the Fox FM Studio, I do miss the days when they released their albums for free though…
Surf Manitou – The Garrys
These three ladies come from Saskatoon, and they’re the younger sisters of an old bandmate of mine, once this record dropped, I was hooked, an all-female doo-wop group, singing song about Manitou Springs resort in Saskatchewan? Sign me up. And if you can listen to it, do it.
Face Your Fear – Curtis Harding
This one is relatively new, but it’s high up on the list. I grew up listening to soul music, and it’s modern iteration has always seemed some empty to me. This record on the other hand, has me smiling and dancing when I go on long late night walks
All The Light Above It Too – Jack Johnson
Jack Johnson is the most chill bro in the history of being chill. This is the soundtrack to Summer. All the Summers, ever.
Lotta Sea Lice – Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile
Two laid back musicians doing what they do best, Courtney’s excellent lyricism mixed with Kurt’s amazing grooves, this is something you put for every long road trip.
Volume 1 – Bros.
You may have heard these guys very often on Fox FM, you may have heard them in their other band, The Sheepdogs, well this is Shamus and Ewan’s side project, which is just as amazing and musical as their straight forward rock efforts, plus they’re real stand-up guys.
Melodrama – Lorde
I listened to almost 15,000 minutes of music on spotify, and if I were to place a bet on how much of that was listening to this record, I’d say about 14 percent. I have never liked a pop record so much in my life, its deeply personal, it draws you in, one of those rare front-to-back listens as well.
There you have it, ten albums I loved in 2017, what are yours? Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll bug Reader for his.
