Hey, everybody – Reader here! And one of my favourite sports events is underway, as the 2018 FIFA World Cup of Soccer kicked off this morning in Russia, with the host team hammering Saudi Arabia, by a score of 5-0.
As has usually been the case, Canada didn’t qualify for this year’s tournament. In fact, the Maple Leaf has flown only once at the World Cup, in 1986, when Mexico hosted the tournament.
That year, Canada lost all three games in the group stage, and failed to advance. It’s a scenario that’s nothing new for Canada, who have traditionally struggled on the world stage, save for a surprise run to the CONCACAF Gold Cup championship in 2000.
Frankly, our women’s soccer team tends to outshine our men’s team. Of course it helps to have one of the greatest players in the game…
But, with yesterday’s announcement, that the united bid by Canada, Mexico, and the United States has been selected to host the 2026 World Cup, the men’s team may once again get an opportunity to show their stuff on the world stage.
As far as this year’s tournament, since Canada isn’t playing, I’ll go back to my roots, and cheer for one of the two teams that represent my background – England! Much like my Philadelphia Flyers, England’s only championship came before I was even born.
I could go with Germany, as I have strong German roots, as well, but a lot of my favourite music comes from the U.K., so that tips the scale in England’s favour. Not to mention the two nations are bitter rivals, so you kind of have to choose one or the other.
In the end, this is what all 32 teams are playing for…
No matter who you cheer for, I hope you have a great time enjoying one of the world’s greatest sporting events, whether your at home, in a pub, or wherever you choose to take in the action. As always, you know it’ll be a month of exciting action!
With that, I’ll leave you with what has become one of the great football songs for England… Courtesy of Baddiel & Skinner. BRING IT HOME, THREE LIONS!!!
