I am a HUGE sports fan.
Hockey and basketball are my two favourites, but when it comes to #3, it’s a toss-up, between football and IndyCar racing.
I’m super excited, because this Sunday, the 2016 IndyCar season begins, with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, down in Florida.
My brothers and I have been big IndyCar fans since we were kids, cheering on drivers such as Al Unser, Jr., Michael Andretti, and Bobby Rahal, along with outstanding Canadian drivers, including Paul Tracy, the late Greg Moore, Jacques Villeneuve, Alex Tagliani, and Patrick Carpentier.
We’ve even had the opportunity to attend a few races (in both Vancouver and Edmonton). The cars, the speed, the atmosphere… it’s amazing. You get a sense of what these drivers and machines are capable of, when you see them on TV, but when you see in person, just how fast those cars move and how loud they get, you gain a much greater appreciation for what these men and women do!
Canada has long been a hotbed of great IndyCar drivers, and there is a pretty big fanbase north of the 49th, for this particular brand of racing.
As the 2016 season starts, I know I’m looking forward to seeing the return of Oakville, Ontario’s James Hinchcliffe, known to many, as the “Mayor of Hinchtown.”
It’s a pretty monumental return for Hinch, after his crash last May, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, when he came very close to losing his life, following a crash during practice, for the Indy 500.
For Hinchcliffe to survive the crash and his severe injuries is amazing enough, but here we are, less than a year later, and he’s ready to hit the track for the 2016 season opener! It’s a great tribute to Hinch’s inner drive to compete, as well as to the medical professionals who saved his life, and guided his recovery, allowing him to get to this point.
IndyCar may not have the profile of other sports, such as hockey of football, but if you’re looking for some athletes with fun personalities and nerves of steel, not to mention some of the fastest machines on earth, give IndyCar a try! The racing action can’t be beat, and the drivers are a fun bunch of guys!
Check out this commercial for the Indycar Series, featuring Hinch, Josef NewGarden, Marco Andretti and Conor Daly, along with a cameo appearance by the legendary Mario Andretti!
I agree – the offseason is way too long!
This Sunday, the 2016 IndyCar season gets underway! I know I’ll be watching!
