Beetlemania is growing in Victoria as John Lennon’s psychedelic Rolls-Royce now calls the Royal BC Museum home!
The car will be put on display for the world to see. The car didn’t come like this, it was actually Ringo’s idea to paint the car all psychedelic and change a few things. John did turn the backseat into a bed, added a TV and even had the first floating record player in the car.
When John and Yoko moved to New York, the car came with them but sat in a garage most of the time since they did more walking to places than actual driving. The car was lent out to Lennon’s famous friends like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan when they visited the Big Apple, but other than that the car just stayed put.
The car was donated to the Smithsonian Museum back in 1977 when John needed to cover a $250,000 tax bill and then 8 years later the car was sold!
The cars new owner is Saskatchewan’s own Jimmy Pattison. The 4th richest man in the country! He bought the car for 2.3 million dollars to help promote Expo 1986 in the British Pavilion! But now the car sits in a storage unit owned and operated by the Museum to keep the car in excellent condition!
The car is on display till the end of the month.
