On Friday night, I, along with a number of co-workers had the opportunity to attend the 35th annual Yorkton Ducks Unlimited Spring Banquet, at St. Mary’s Cultural Centre.
As always, it was a great event, and I’d like to say a HUGE “thank you,” to everyone who made it such a success, including Ron Skinner and the members of the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited, along with everyone who helped to make another outstanding meal for eveyone to enjoy!
For the fourth year in a row, Fox FM also took part in the “BBQ Sauce Media Challenge!”
In the past, the phrase “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” seemed to apply to us. We’d come close in the past, but just couldn’t get a win.
This year, however, things were a little different.
Travis Stewart and I got together in the “Sauce Lab,” (a.k.a. the kitchenette between our boardroom and our general manager, Angie’s office), and set about coming up with our culinary creation.
We came up with four different sauce variations, using different bases. Most were good, while one was awful, and would burn the taste buds right off of your tongue! (Note to self – a little cayenne pepper goes a long way!)
Travis and I both liked the last combo the best, and we had some of our co-workers come in and taste-test, and give us their input. (Thanks to Fox music master & afternoon drive host Mike Wilson, Chad and Renee, from our sales department, and our receptionist, Darnelle, for helping us out with our market research!)
Turns out we all liked the same one, and chose it as our entry.
Well, not only did we like it, but so did a majority of voters at the Ducks Unlimited banquet, and they chose OUR sauce, the “Sweet Kick,” as the winner! A shout-out to our competition, as well, they came up with three dynamite sauces of their own, that easily could have been the winner!
We shattered the glass ceiling, and claimed Fox FM’s first ever victory, in four attempts!
Now, the pressure’s on to come up with something good, to defend our title!
If you’d like to try our recipe, here it is! It’s simple to put together, but delicious on ribs and chicken!
READER & TRAVIS’ “SWEET KICK” BBQ SAUCE
1/2 cup – Kraft Brown Sugar BBQ Sauce (base)
1/3 cup – Liquid Honey
2 tablespoons – brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon – chili powder
1/2 teaspoon – cinnamon
Hope you enjoy it! Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to celebrate!
I may have gotten a little carried away… Haha! Cheers!
