What’s up, friends? Reader here, glad to be back, following a relaxing week off.
I spent most of the week chilling out at our family farm, just west of Conquest, Saskatchewan, about an hour southwest of Saskatoon.
But, before I headed home, I went the other direction, and put a few miles on Quicksilver (my ’08 Honda Civic), as I headed east to Winnipeg, for the weekend of December 8th and 9th. Initially, I was going to see my beloved Philadelphia Flyers in action against the Jets, on the 9th. However, fate intervened, and added a surprise bonus for me, as another one of my passions – World Wrestling Entertainment – happened to be in the ‘Peg on the evening of the 8th. You couldn’t ask for a more “Reader” weekend, if you tried!
So, on the Saturday night, I headed down to Bell MTS Place to see the superstars of SmackDown Live!, where most of my favourites feature.
Among the matches, the always-entertaining New Day failed to wrest the Tag-Team titles away from “The Bar,” Sheamus and Cesaro. The “Ravishing Russian,” Lana, defeated both members of the IIconics, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson knocked off the Colon Brothers, Primo and Epico, and longtime fan fave Jeff Hardy “miraculously” recovered from an ambush earlier in the evening, to beat the dastardly Samoa Joe.
Here’s a few pics from some of the main-event matches.
U.S. Champ Shinsuke Nakamura put his belt on the line against the “Bulgarian Brute,” Rusev. But, alas, it was not a “Happy Rusev Day” for the challenger, who received a vicious low blow from the champ, who held onto his title via disqualification.
Then, in a match I was really looking forward to, the “Queen,” Charlotte Flair locked up with the mighty Asuka. The ladies have really taken over as the most exciting performers in the company (in my opinion), and this was the match of the night for me.
And her opponent…
In the end, the Queen was able to roll up Asuka for the pin. Not the result I was hoping for, but it was a fantastic bout.
And the night’s main event saw the “Phenomenal” A.J. Styles battle The Miz… the reality star-turned-WWE Champ, who is an absolute master of working the crowd.
Would The Miz be able to get the upper hand? Only briefly…
In the end, A.J. got the duke, to send the crowd home happy.
So… that was Saturday night. On to Sunday afternoon, and the main reason for the trip… Flyers vs. Jets.
This has not been a great year for my boys. Frankly, the team’s in a state of chaos right now, and have struggled all year. But the Flyers came out strong, and got some great early chances.
Connor Hellebuyck was stellar between the pipes, and kept the Jets in the game despite an early Orange & Black onslaught. But some timely turnovers were Philly’s undoing, and soon enough, Winnipeg took control.
The action continued, and eventually the Jets piled it on. The Flyers were chasing the puck all afternoon.
In the end, the powerful Winnipeg lineup was just too much for Philly. I’ll let the scoreboard say it all…
After the game, I made the drive back to Yorkton, and enjoyed the rest of my week off!
So there’s the highlights of my short holiday! It was great to get away and recharge the batteries!
Check in tomorrow, and I’ll have the next installment of my favourite Christmas tunes!
