Don’t Let Love Make You Do Something Stupid!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, our hearts are aflutter with thoughts of love and companionship. The sweet scent of roses, the enchanting melodies of love songs, and the whimsical atmosphere that surrounds this special day. But let me tell you a cautionary tale, one that will make you think twice before doing something stupid and cringey for a guy or girl just to impress them or because you love them.

Picture this: a young, ambitious individual (me), ready to take on the world, receives a job offer in another province. It’s the start of their career, you know, the one they went to college for. But alas, there’s a catch! Their significant other, at the time, is not interested in moving or doing long-distance. And so, what happens next is a prime example of why we should never let love blind us from our own dreams and aspirations.

I nearly rejected that job offer! Can you believe it? I was willing to sacrifice my own growth and potential for the sake of love. To make matters worse, we broke up about a month later anyways. But as I look back now, I can’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all. You should never have a reason to suppress our personal growth or compromise on our dreams. In fact, true love should uplift and support us in pursuing our passions.

Valentine’s Day, with all its romantic allure, can sometimes lead us astray. We feel a sense of obligation to perform grand gestures or change ourselves to impress our significant others. But love should never be about changing who we are or sacrificing our own happiness for someone else’s.

Let’s face it, doing something like what I did for someone may give you temporary satisfaction, but it won’t lead to a fulfilling, long-lasting relationship. Authentic connections are built on mutual respect, shared values, and supporting each other’s personal growth. When we allow love to make us do foolish things, we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment and heartache in the long run.
