Vaping might become more expensive this summer due to a tax hike proposed in the federal government’s budget for this year.
Starting July 1, the cost of a vape pod will rise by 12 to 24 cents, depending on the region in Canada. This increase is expected to generate $310 million in revenue for the government over the next five years.
While Ottawa claims the price increase aims to reduce high vaping rates among young Canadians, public health experts argue that the tax may be ineffective and could lead to unintended consequences.
