The 2024 Manitoba Junior Hockey League draft took place yesterday (Sun) as the thirteen-member clubs selected 2008-born players to join their organizations.
For the Swan Valley Stampeders it was a busy day as they made six total selections.
With their first pick, third overall they selected defenceman Casey Magarrell from Domain, Manitoba. Magarrell had 19 points (4G 15A) in 28 games with the RHA Winnipeg U17 Prep this past season.
The Stampeders also selected:
2nd round, 16th overall:
F Crosby Harrison – Winnipeg, Manitoba
(41GP 10G 6A = 16 points with Winnipeg Thrashers (MB U18 AAA)
2nd round, 19th overall:
F Jaxson Brick – Brandon, Manitoba
(27GP 3G 1A = 4 points with Brandon Wheat Kings (MB U18 AAA)
3rd round, 39th overall:
F Dwight Sawatzky – Mather, Manitoba
(31GP 4G 8A = 12 points with Pilot Mound Academy U17 Prep (CSSHL))
4th round, 45th overall:
D Jacob Reimer – Lorette, Manitoba
(36GP 2G 23A = 25 points with Eastman Selects U17 Prep (CSSHL))
6th round, 68th overall:
F Cole Lobreau – Brandon, Manitoba
(44GP 5G 9A = 14 points with Brandon Wheat Kings (MB U18 AAA)
Meanwhile the Waywayseecappo had four total selections in the draft including two in the first round after trading up with the Winnipeg Blues.
But with the first pick, 4th overall, the Wolverines picked up Oakburn, MB’s Cole Hunter from Oakburn, Manitoba. Hunter had 36 points (15 goals, 21 assists) in 44 games this year with the Yellowhead Chiefs in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League.
The Wolverines also selected in the first round, F Hank Thompson from the Norman Northstars with the 10th pick before wrapping up their draft with F Alec Strachan (Hamiota, MB) in round two and F Gavin Quenelle from Winnipeg in third round.
