Reader here, and I want to know – if you’re feeling lazy, and don’t want to cook, or it’s been one of those days, and you just need a little pick-me-up to get you through the day, what do you like to snack on?
Well, since I was a kid, there’s one thing above all that I like to nosh on…
That’s right! Toast!
So easy, so delicious.
How do you like your toast? My favourite way? As you can guess from the above picture, I love toast and Cheez Whiz!
I maintain to this day, that the only thing that can salvage a piece of burnt toast is Cheez Whiz. I like my toast on the darker side anyway, but it’s a dynamite combo.
In fact, growing up one New Year’s Eve, I put our toaster at the farm to work, and I crushed an entire loaf of bread, turning it into toast and Cheez Whiz.
I regret nothing.
Fun fact about Cheez Whiz – it was invented back in the 1950’s, in order to help homemakers save time in the kitchen! (Oh, the hours I’ve wasted applying cheese to my toast in less efficient ways!)
I also like to put Cheez Whiz on soda crackers, and it’s one of the key ingredients in a great Philly Cheeseteak!
My mom uses it to make a cheese sauce that goes amazingly well with cauliflower and broccoli, too!
My other favourite way to enjoy toast? With eggs.
In our family, eggs and toast have been a staple for as long as I can remember.
Fry up some eggs (I’m an overeasy guy, myself), lay ’em on top of some toast. Add a little salt and pepper, and voila! And the perfect beverage to go with eggs and toast? Chocolate milk. You gotta try it. Some combos are just magic.
This photo? I kid you not… August 2017. My brothers and I were crashing at the Holiday Inn Express in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, after having our faces melted by MetallicA at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
We went to bed, and I tossed and turned all night. Didn’t sleep a wink.
Finally, I said “to heck with this,” and headed down to the lobby for the breakfast buffet.
And I found something I’d never seen before.
Usually, at a breakfast buffet, you’ll find a warming tray full of scrambled eggs. Which is fine.
But, this fateful morning in Fort Sask, I found a FRIED EGG buffet, and amazingly, they were even done the way I like ’em!
So, naturally, I had to snap a photo.
Toast and Cheez Whiz, eggs and toast.
Heck, even fry up some bologna, slap some mustard on it, and throw it between two ieces of toast, and you’ve got a tasty sandwich! You can’t beat the versatility of toast!
Toast is so wonderful that songs have been written about it.
This is a classic…
But, I think I have a new favourite ode to my beloved toast…
And yes, that is Paul “Everytime You Go Away” Young on lead vocals!
Everybody loves toast!
