Reader’s ready for a holiday… warm or not!

Reader here, and much to my chagrin, we’re back in the deep freeze.

As I wrote this, there’s an Extreme Cold Warning in effect for pretty much the entire listening area, and it’s making me question once again, why I live in a place where the cold air hurts my face!

I kid, of course. There’s no place I’d rather live. I’m Saskatchewan-born and bred, and when the time comes, I’ll be Saskatchewan-dead. (Hopefully not for a long, long time!)

But that’s not to say I don’t think about escaping the cold for a nice warm vacation once in a while.

I’ve only actually ever taken one hot holiday in my lifetime.

Back in November-December of 2011, me, my big brother by another mother Neil, and a few friends took a seven night through the Eastern Caribbean, and it was awesome!

We boarded the Carnival Liberty, and set sail, with stops in Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos.

Enjoying the white sand and warm ocean water in Half Moon Cay, in the Bahamas.
Me being a grown-up as always, in Half Moon Cay!
Checking out the scenery in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I’d love to do it again sometime, whether its a cruise, or a trip to an all-inclusive resort somewhere.

In the end, like much of life, it all depends on the money situation, right?

With things as they are currently, I don’t think I’ll be making a trip to the USA anytime soon.

Of course, there are many other parts of the world to explore.

And, despite the winter weather, I’d love to explore Canada, and see everything our beautiful country has to offer. We have so much in our our own backyard that is amazing, and now might be the best time to check it out.

Just one question, though. Why does it cost so stinkin’ much to fly within our own borders?

Ever notice how flying within Canada can sometimes feel more expensive than jetting off to a tropical beach? It’s ridiculous!

I get it… with our vast landscapes, limited carriers, and those pesky taxes and fees, the costs can really stack up.

But there’s got to be ways to scratch that itch to travel and save a bit of cash at the same time.

Of course, you really have to start by keeping your eyes peeled for seat sales — sometimes they pop up when you least expect them! Maybe you can travel some alternate routes or fly into smaller airports that might offer a better fare, rather than jetting into Pearson in Toronto, or Vancouver International Airport.

Don’t forget, a little comparison shopping between airlines can go a long way in keeping things easy on the wallet. I’ve tried some of those travel websites in the past, and fortunately, I haven’t had a bad experience. Maybe that’s a way to go!

Traveling should be about the joy of discovery, not stressing over costs. And maybe now is the perfect time to explore what’s in our own backyard!

Check this out! (Even though they kind of ignore Saskatchewan and Manitoba – what else is new?) This is a cool snapshot of what Canada has to offer!

Do you have any laid-back tips or secret hacks for finding budget-friendly flights within Canada? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences! Share your wisdom, and let’s all get the most out of our travels!
